Pressure Gradient Verification for ORs and ICUs

A southern regional hospital preparing for accreditation needed to confirm that pressure gradients and airflow organization across its ORs and ICUs met ASHRAE 170. SYE completed verification and optimization of 8 operating rooms and the ICU during non-surgical days.

Challenge

Challenge

Some ORs dated to an earlier construction era; as-built drawings diverged from current ductwork, making supply/return ratios hard to locate quickly. Post-COVID, several rooms had been repurposed into negative-pressure isolation, requiring the pressure-gradient logic to be revalidated.

Approach

Our Approach

  1. 01

Room-by-room mapping of supply/return diffusers with velocity and volumetric flow measurements

  2. 02

ASHRAE 170-based calculation of air changes per hour (ACH) and pressure differential thresholds

  3. 03

Smoke testing to verify airflow direction and flag recirculation points

  4. 04

Recommended ductwork modifications and VAV adjustments, plus a phased remediation plan

Outcomes

Outcomes

  • Positive pressure differentials within spec
  • Airflow pattern optimized
  • Full ASHRAE 170 report
